REARVIEW REVIEW
While consulting with a Senior Manager last week, he told me how he was in the process of recruiting someone for a much sought after position. He shared one of the wonderful questions he asks in an interview –
What would your former bosses, employees and colleagues say about you?
This may seem like a basic question, yet the outcomes are very powerful.
The question adds a lot of flavour to the interview. Rather than hearing well-rehearsed answers about strengths and weaknesses, the question gives the interviewer perspective as to what sort of insight the candidate has about themselves.
Asking the question also makes the interviewee pause to be more honest in their answer. It’s easy to say you’re good when there’s no possibility of it being tested.
Applying this “rearview review” can be adapted to many aspects of your business and life.
Ask yourself, “What would your customers say about you?”
Taking time to really think about how the outside world would run a commentary on you or your business gives you the opportunity to think about – “What would you want them to say about you?”
Giving yourself the mental space to answer these questions or going that step further and actually asking your customers or colleagues what they would say about you is a great way to identify potential gaps when devising your next steps for growth.
